This Dell PowerEdge R740xd pairs our tested GPU-ready platform with two NVIDIA Tesla T4 16GB accelerators. The T4 is a 70W, low-profile, single-slot card that draws all of its power from the PCIe slot, so there is no auxiliary GPU cable to source, match or get wrong. Two cards give you 32GB of GPU memory for inference, VDI and video workloads at a fraction of the power and heat of a 300W card.

Why Two T4s

• No power cable to get wrong. The most common way GPU installs fail in this chassis is the auxiliary cable: data-center cards take an EPS-12V 8-pin, workstation cards take PCIe power, and the two are easy to confuse. The T4 needs neither.
• Matched to the slot. The T4 is a PCIe Gen3 x16 card, the same generation as the R740xd's slots, so it runs at its full native link speed.
• Low power, low heat. 140W of GPU load in total, compared with 300W for a single A40. Easier on the rack, the inlet temperature limit and the power budget.
• Room to grow. The R740xd takes up to six single-width GPUs. Dell requires all installed GPUs to be the same model, so additional T4s are the upgrade path.
• Current driver support. The T4 is a Turing card and remains on NVIDIA's current data-center driver branch.

Configuration — Already Handled

The T4 is passively cooled: no fan of its own. It depends on chassis airflow, which is why this build carries the same GPU platform as our larger builds: the GPU enablement kit and shroud, low-profile heat sinks in both CPU sockets, the high-performance fan kit and 2x 1600W supplies. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the NVIDIA T4 need a GPU power cable?
No. The T4 draws 70W, within the 75W a PCIe slot supplies, so it has no auxiliary power connector.

How much GPU memory does this server have?
32GB in total: 16GB of GDDR6 on each of the two T4 cards. Each card holds its own model; the T4 has no NVLink, so the two cards do not pool memory.

Can I add more T4s later?
Yes. The R740xd supports up to six single-width GPUs, and Dell requires all installed GPUs to be the same model. Contact us and we will quote additional T4s installed and tested.

Does it come with an operating system?
No OS is included. The server supports Windows Server, Linux distributions, VMware ESXi and Proxmox. iDRAC Enterprise is licensed for remote installation and management.
